Welcome to my cake and cupcake blog! I started my cupcake and cake adventures here in Calgary, AB in May 2009 when I brought cupcakes to a friend's birthday party. The response was so enthusiastic I decided to continue trying out different designs and flavours. It's been a great creative outlet and I enjoy the challenge each new order brings me.
Toy Story
This was a fun cake to make, I learned a lot! Had to start over on the figures more than once, but it turned out well. See my blog comments in the Adventures in Baking to see more pictures.
Champagne Bottle on Ice
This is a cake that was ordered for a retirement party. I took my newly learned cake carving skills and put them to the test. The bucket and bottle are cake, and I made a hard candy to mimic ice cubes.
Pinto Horse
This cake was for a friend's daughter who loves horses but not fondant. Since I like the way fondant looks, I decided to mould the horse from cereal treats and cover that with fondant. It could then be easily removed from the cake before serving, yet still give the cake some "wow factor".
"Boucake" Anyone?
This cake bouquet came about from melding some ideas I found on the internet. These fondant covered gems are hiding a centre of smooshed cake and buttercream icing. I think I'm on to something here, look for more pictures of "boucakes" to come!
Valentine's Day
These were a special order of Valentine's cupcakes. I was lucky to have heart shaped cupcake tins for the occasion. These are topped with a raspberry buttercream and fondant decorations. The others are dipped in chocolate ganache, but filled with the raspberry buttercream for a "surprise" centre.
Groovy Baby, Yeah
I did the cake for a cake walk at my daughter's annual school fundraiser. The theme for the party was "Stuck in the '70's". This is a combination of a buttercream covered cake but with fondant decorations.
iPod Touch Cake
This was one of my earlier cakes, an iPod Touch for a pre-teen girl's birthday. All the "apps" are hand done in fondant and added to the cake. It was a fun challenge!
First Communion Cake
This was a recent order for a First Communion cake. I was sent a picture of what they wanted it to look like, so I can't take credit for the design, but I'm pleased with how it turned out!
Sweet and Simple
This is a raspberry swiss-meringue buttercream on a gluten free white cake. I've done a simple cascade of white fondant flowers.
Colts Football Helmet
A carved cake for a football fan. This cake was a chocolate cake with a caramel swiss-meringue buttercream. I really liked how the caramel frosting tasted with the chocolate cake, it is a must repeat flavour combination.
Crayon Box Cake
This cake was for a little boy who loves to colour. It was a banana cake with cream cheese frosting.
Hats off to the Denver Broncos!
I was really happy with how this cake turned out. I was stumped in the beginning as to how to get the correct colour combinations for the Broncos team, their current blue is a very dark navy and would require enormous amounts of food colouring. I decided to skip those colours and go with the "vintage" Broncos colours and logo! As luck would have it, this is the birthday boy's favourite hat.
